Reformation Timeline—Unit 2

Grades 6 and 8—Unit 2

Tools:
You will use whatever digital tool you choose. A great tool to create a timeline is Prezi.

Reference Material:
Concordia: The Lutheran Confessions, second edition; Law and Gospel: How to Read and Apply the Bible

Objectives:

  • Students will gain an understanding of the history of the Reformation.

Duration of Project:
You will want to budget time throughout a two-week period to work with the other class on this project. It should not require time every day, but is rather something you will be able to complete over that time span with proper time management.

Activity:
This is a joint project between the sixth- and eighth-grade classes.

You will need to obtain a copy of Concordia: The Lutheran Confessions, second edition, as well as Walther’s Law and Gospel. (If you don’t personally have a copy, ask your pastor! He should have them!)

The sixth-grade classes will make an interactive timeline for all of the events on the timeline in Concordia: The Lutheran Confessions. The eighth-grade class will create a timeline from the Thirty Years’ War to Walther’s death from Law and Gospel.

Have your classes decide how the timelines will be presented. Will you just have titles and descriptions, or will you try to include images as well? Come up with a predefined layout prior to creating the timeline.

When you are finished, combine the timelines to make the history of the founding fathers of the LCMS.

Digital Citizenship Connection:
Because the information is already laid out for your students, you will want to stress to them the importance of typing information in their own language as best as they can. Whether you plan on sharing this timeline outside of your school building or not, be sure to include the following text at the bottom of the screen of your timeline: Adapted from Law and Gospel by C. F. Differentiation:
Because this is a massive group project, you will want to distribute the content of the timeline between your students. Work with either individuals or groups on their required contribution to the timeline.

If you prefer, you can create this timeline without any digital tools the first time, perhaps using a long roll of paper. This may help you get a sense of the project and how it will function. Challenge yourself to work on creating the project digitally for the next year .
