The Sacrament of the Altar—Unit 8

Grade 4—Unit 8

Tools:
Presentation Software (PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Slides) and Movie Software (iMovie, Windows Movie Maker, WeVideo)

Reference Material:
Luther’s Small Catechism (as found in the back of student books)

Duration of Project:
This project should take three days.

Objectives:

  • Tell that in the Lord’s Supper God gives the gift of Himself to all.
  • Identify the blessings offered to those who receive the Lord’s Supper in faith.

Activity:
Using page 263 in the back of the Student Workbook, have students create a video that narrates each of the five questions Luther answered about the Sacrament of the Altar. Be sure students are reading the questions and answers as well as describing what the text means to them. Talk to students about the importance of illustrations in their video, that is, finding great images that support the text they are narrating.

Digital Citizenship Connection:
Have students use the Advanced Google Image Search to limit their results to different types of images that are licensed under Creative Commons. Have students list a citation somewhere in their presentation for the picture location and CC license they are using.

Differentiation:
This project can easily turn into a purely creative task with little substance rather than focusing on the content. It is important that you provide the appropriate context for what they are going to be covering so the appropriate reverence is given to the project. Students of this age will be eager to talk about the Lord’s Supper. It might be a great time to bring in your pastor to do a mini-lesson on this topic.

Students may require more help finding appropriate imagery for their video. Be sure to be available as students are finding this content to give feedback on its appropriate use. Also, be sure to look for Lutheran imagery of the Sacraments.
