New Life!

None of us want to die, right? Wrong. The sad truth is that many people do want to die and each year they succeed in taking their own lives. As of 2016, the second leading cause of death among teenagers ages fifteen to nineteen is suicide (http://www.ahchealthenews.com/2016/07/18/suicide-now-second-leading-cause-death-teens/). This breaks my heart.

New Birth in Baptism

Cleansing and birth are not at all synonymous in my mind. In fact, when I think back to the birth of my children, I’m more apt to think, “Eeesh, what a messy process.” Birth is not at all clean. But the “washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit” is an entirely different prospect

The Gift of Baptism

What did you get for Christmas last year or for your last birthday? Are you expecting a nice gift for Valentine’s Day? Were those gifts everything you had hoped for? Were they better than you expected? Or were they a disappointment? Even if we loved a gift when we first got it, over time, that gift may wear out, be used up, or be lost. Not so with the gift of Baptism.

The Nature of Baptism

Water is some pretty powerful stuff. Think of the damage that is has done to land and property by flooding and hurricanes. Think of the power of water to grow crops and feed nations. Think about the power of water in our bodies. Too much, and we drown; too little, and we dehydrate and eventually die.

Winter Blues

Perhaps you are experiencing the middle-of-the-school-year blues. The beginning of the school year is new and exciting. New students, new co-workers, new schedule, new material—not to forget those squeaky new whiteboard markers! The beginning of the school year is filled with so much excitement and energy. However, by the end of January, you may feel like the inner fire in you has been extinguished. The students have figured out just how to push your buttons. Your new co-workers have become frustrating. The markers have dried out. You’re just trying to make it to the end. Fake it till you make it, as they say.

Resolutions

Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? Did you set up any accountability system to help you stay on track? By the end of February, 80 percent of Americans who set New Year’s resolutions will have failed at them. Maybe you didn’t make any particular New Year’s resolutions, but you have told yourself at one point in time, “I am going to become better at ____,” or, “I will stop ___.” We’ve all made declarations of change, but we are creatures of habit. Change is extremely difficult, especially when it means changing your schedule or routine.

God Is Our Refuge and Strength

What is your source of comfort? Do you reach for the pint of ice cream or a fuzzy blanket? In The Sound of Music, Julie Andrews’s character famously sang about her favorite things to comfort young children during a thunderstorm. I keep a mental list of my favorite things to get me through a tough day. While I don’t have cream-colored ponies or crisp apple strudel on hand, I do have my pet terrier and a creamy bowl of macaroni and cheese. The moment you grab your favorite things, you suddenly get a sense of peace and happiness. But how do you feel when you finish the pint of ice cream or when your dog isn’t in the mood to cuddle?

My Help Comes from the Lord

I often feel as though I could use my own personal assistant—someone to reply to emails, sort through paperwork, and stand by me no matter what unexpected events come my way. I’m sure you have felt this way on a hectic school day. But even when volunteers or friends do offer to help, I sometimes have trouble letting go of those responsibilities. It’s hard to relinquish control! We love to dictate our lives, schedules, and classrooms. But where do we turn when it becomes more than we can handle?
